Painkillers Epidemic:

The newswires are abuzz today over the latest findings from the CDC on the prescription drug problem in the US.  The CDC Prescription Drug Study Findings:

  • More Americans die from prescription medications that from heroine and cocaine combined.
  • Drug deaths have eclipsed car crash related deaths for the first time in the US
  • Deaths due to prescription narcotics (painkillers) rose a whopping 400% in the past decade
  • The number of narcotics prescribed has also increased 400% in the past decade
  • 14,800 overdose deaths were attributed to narcotic painkillers (that equates to about 75% of the total deaths from prescription drugs which was 20,044)
  • Most overdose deaths are attributed to taking someone else’s prescription painkillers
  • Enough narcotics are prescribed each year to medicate the entire adult US population daily for a month
  • Many prescription painkiller addictions begin innocently from lack of relief with non-narcotics and doctors prescribing narcotics
  • Doctors have been erroneously trained to believe that short term use of narcotics is non addicting

Why do we have this painkiller addiction problem?…
…because pain is an oft misunderstood problem and improperly treated by generalist doctors who rely on erroneous medical school training and education from drug reps.

Many doctors prescribe highly addictive narcotics as a first line of pain relief treatment thinking it will only be short term and safe. After the painful condition
subsides, they reason, the patient will discontinue use before they can become addicted. The problem with that is that these opioids are just like cocaine and heroine
and are highly addictive. You can become dependent on them in a matter of only a couple of weeks. Doctors now admit that medical school raining that said short-term use of narcotics is relatively safe and would rarely lead to addiction was wrong. The other problem is that there are other alternatives to narcotics to help control pain that are non-addictive that the physicians are unaware of.

And just when you thought it was safe to take other medications, even over the counter anti-inflammatory pain relievers like aspirin, acetaminophen (Tylenol) ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), think again.

Non-steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDS) are reported to cause over 100,000 hospitalizations and at least 16,000 deaths each year.

Any pain relief medication, whether prescribed or bought over the counter (OTC), should be monitored closely. You should be aware that ingesting alcohol with NSAIDS can lead to serious stomach bleeding, and obviously react poorly with narcotics. Motrin reduces the effectiveness of some blood pressure medications, which could cause serious cardiac issues. You should also know that even though your doctor or pharmacist may not have told you, it is illegal to drive a car while taking prescription narcotics. You are considered to be driving under the influence. It’s the reason for the yellow warning label on the bottle about operating machinery. How many people do you suppose are driving around impaired on prescription drugs?

With frightening statistics like these, wouldn’t it be better to control or eliminate your pain without the use of any drugs at all?
